We set ourselves the goal of scoring 500 points at this year’s NZ women’s barbershop contest held in Wellington in May.
In 2009 we had won the Most Improved trophy – given to the chorus who has raised their score the most since they last competed. It was going to take another significant lift to reach that 500 mark.
As part of the plan we organised a series of coaching visits, including several with Christchurch City Chorus director Virginia Humphrey-Taylor. That chorus is one of the top 10 Sweet Adelines choruses in the world and Virginia is a professional vocal coach, so we were in good hands.
Members also came to extra rehearsals to iron out any issues as we learned the songs and also to hone their vocal skills.
The result of all this effort and enthusiasm was a score of 508 points! And to top it off we brought home the Most Improved trophy again!
