College and intermediate students throughout the Nelson region recently had the opportunity to hear one of NZs top women’s barbershop quartets.
ZEAL quartet is based in Auckland and the members are aged 21 and under. They competed for the first time and came third in this year’s Sweet Adelines national competition. Earlier this month the quartet was sponsored by Sweet Adelines NZ to travel to Nelson and promote barbershop a cappella singing in the local secondary schools.
They visited several colleges to perform and spread their enthusiasm for singing barbershop. Next term Nelson Bays Harmony will be launching Young Singers in Harmony at Nayland College where emerging voices will be taught the skills, joy and rewards of performing and singing four-part a cappella harmony, barbershop style.
Nelson Bays Harmony also welcome women singers (young and less young) to join their group who rehearse each Thursday evening at Club Waimea.
